Myths tend to start as early attempts at explanation (for example, of how the world came into being), but they are much more than this.
The intergenerational aspect is another important qualification of models of individual development – the past to which a therapist looks is not just the individual history of the client’s life, but where it can be ascertained, how the influence of the parents’ history, and of the generation above them too, might play itself out in the family. Walker provides a telling example of this in her book on women in therapy (1990: 22–39); and of course systemic and family therapy has recognized the importance of a more comprehensive history than that of the identified client alone (see Allen 1994).
